Nail Trauma: Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Nail trauma can occur due to various reasons such as crushing, dropping something on the toe, illfitting footwear, or repetitive micro injuries caused by excessive use or abnormal biomechanics. In this video, we will discuss the causes, symptoms, and management options for nail trauma.

Nail trauma can vary in severity and can lead to a dark discoloration under the nail such as dark stripes, also known as subungual hematoma. In more severe cases, the nail can split or detach from the nail bed and may even result in the toe bone being fractured.

This condition can affect both men and women of all ages, but frequent runners and those wearing illfitting shoes are at higher risk of experiencing nail trauma.

If neglected, nail trauma can lead to complications such as infection, abnormal nail growth, ingrown toenails, unsightly nail deformities, and even skin cancer (melanoma).

If you're experiencing nail trauma or discoloration under the nail without any cause, it's important to consult a podiatrist immediately. This will help in the timely diagnosis and management of the condition, improving the chances of a full recovery.
