The Miniature Poodle is part of the Poodle breed of dogs, and differs from the Standard Poodle only in size. The breed is of European origin, but its earliest ancestors are believed to have been curlyhaired herding dogs of Central Asia. These evolved into a German water dog, which were then standardized in France. The Standard Poodle was being used on the European mainland for several centuries as a water retriever in hunting before it reached England, and has been depicted in German, French and Spanish art beginning from the 15th century. The Miniature Poodle was developed some time after the Standard version, and was not used near water. Crossing a terrier with a Standard Poodle produced the Miniature variety, which found use as excellent truffle hunters, and as companions for the upper class. The breed’s entry into North America is likely to have been in the 1800s, with the French aristocracy. Since then, the breed has been very popular as a pet and as a show dog.

The height of an adult Miniature Poodle is between 10 and 15 inches, and the weight is between 12 and 18 pounds. The Poodle is an elegant, wellproportioned dog, with a curly, dense coat that can be clipped or corded. The coat is always single layered. The skull is moderately rounded; the cheekbones and muscles are flat. Ears are folded over close to the head. The eyes are dark and oval shaped, with an alert and intelligent expression. The feet are rather small, sometimes giving the appearance of the dog walking on stilettos. The colors seen include white, black, brown, grey, apricot, red, silver, cream, sable and brindle.

Grooming: Coat care for Miniature Poodles being maintained for shows can take at least 10 hours per week. The coats of nonshow or retired dogs are generally cut down to lowmaintenance length. The dog does not shed much, and the hair it does shed tends to get entangled with surrounding hair to form tufts and mats. This still requires brushing once daily. Other activities like brushing of teeth, cleaning of ears and trimming of nails have to be regular.

Environment: The Poodle is a friendly and sociable dog, and loves being around humans. Miniature Poodles tend to be slightly shy, especially around strangers. Compared to the Standard variety, they are also found to be slightly less patient with children. But, this is more a result of the dog being afraid of a child that is larger in size than any innate aggression.

Training: The Poodle is a very intelligent dog, and can easily be trained and taught tricks. It is also an active breed, and enjoys being given work to do. Daily play session and a long walk is needed to keep a Poodle happy. The dog also loves to swim, which can take care of some of the exercise needs.

Health: Miniature Poodles live longer than Standard Poodles on average, with a life expectancy between 13 and 15 years. Common ailments seen are bone related issues, epilepsy, cataract, glaucoma and bloat. Cancer is a common cause of death. Addison’s Disease, a kidney related problem, is also common in Poodles.
