DIY Sifting Cat Litter Box for Wood Pellets

If you are switching to wood or pine pellets you will also need a sifting cat litter box. Using this type of litter can save a lot of money in just one year as one bag lasts a long time.

PELLETS
I use pellets intended for horse stalls similar to these: https://amzn.to/3fpfnmd
The same product sold as cat litter tends to be twice the price so find horse stall pellets if you can.

BINS

The goals are to find something the cats will use, save money, and avoid sending any unnecessary waste to landfills.

You can purchase a sifting litter box or make your own using plastic bins and a drill. I wanted something large enough for two cats so this was a good option.

Be sure to use bins that come with side handles: the bulk of these handles causes a gap between the bins when they are stacked one on top of the other. When wood pellets get wet, they turn to sawdust which falls through the holes into the bin below.

Follow local guidelines for disposing of cat waste and do not flush it (due to possible pathogens).

Pine (and other wood) pellets are arguably more sustainable and ecofriendly than other traditional kitty litters. Look for wood stove pine pellets or horse stall pellets to save money.
