Cheap Pellet Cat Litter - Save Big u0026 Breathe Easier - plus a $1 DIY Sifter

Using ordinary wood stove pellets is a dramatically cheaper alternative to 'clumping' clay cat litter. If you're spending heaps on the latter check out my switch to wood pellets. Less gets tracked around the house on little paws, less goes in the bin, and less cash disappears each month. Make a DIY sifter for a buck using 1/4inch hardware cloth and any old box you have laying around. With special guest appearances by Nigella & Little Bug! Read more about my litter journey at the link in the video.

EDIT 1: Bonus tip After months of pellets I should add that one of the most perfect tools for grabbing the solids daily is a cheap dollar store pair of kitchen tongs (just don't mix them up with the pair in the kitchen). Since pellet poo can be a little messy, I park them and the scoop I use in the (human) toilet for a couple flush/swirls to clean them after each use.

EDIT 2: Several have asked me about buying an appropriate sifter. Shopping links to a SporkApproved readymade sifter coming soon for those of you not into hacking up your own DIY version. I want to get a few and test them before I make a recommendation but in the mean time, get some cheap pellets to test drive with your cats FIRST before spending any money on a sifter. Your oldschool manual scoop will work just fine for a few test weeks.

EDIT 3: Someone pointed out to me after the fact that you can see the Canawick brand (and their site) in my video. While they're the brand I buy because that's what's stocked in my local stores, ANY BRAND of wood pellet stoves should work fine and I don't endorse any specific manufacturer over another. I do prefer hardwood over softwood (pine) as I mention in my video. ALSO: Be careful that you're buying cheap fuel pellets, not 'gourmet' wood smoking pellets for food which would be a real waste of money. Should be less than CDN$7 for 18kg. Happy scooping out there!
