I just happen to try a fat bike I had no idea what a great chose it was going to be. I just thought fat biking was just a fun recovery thing to minimize risk while recovering from an MTB accident.
What I found changed my riding from that point on. If you would have asked me about fat biking early on I would of said something like It looks like a cute fun sort of thing to do. At that time, I had no idea how fat biking was going to change my riding!
At 50 between having a person training coach and with bikes getting lighter and faster my speeds were getting faster. The issue that started to play out was my hand eye coordination was starting to get slower… This combination wasn’t a great mix. I crashed more in one season than had my wholetime racing….. The thing is while in the middle of it I didn’t catch on… It wasn’t until I had an accident that I was off the MTB for a couple months. This is when I tried fat biking. All of a sudden, my timing wasn’t an issue. The fat bike was heavy and slow enough it that I wasn’t having timing issues.
Yes an MTB is the perfect tool for a MTB trail. Yes, I do miss at times the quickness and nimbleness of a MTB. It did take me awhile to get use to jumping a fat bike. A MTB jumped right into the air with you. A fat bike has a fear of leaving the ground….
