Desert Center California. Ghost Town? Abandoned? Forgotten? Exploring some desert roadie' history.

My Castaway Blues

Desert Center has been on my todo list for some time. It's a unique piece of roadie history, both because of its founder 'Desert Steve' and remote location in the Colorado Desert, roughly at the midway point between Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ. The town ruins straddle a section of historic Highway 60, perhaps just over a few hundred yards off modern day Interstate 10. And yet the vibe when walking through town, exploring ruins and attempting to reconstruct the past, couldn't feel more removed from the modern world. It's different on these streets, as though we've stepped back in time to a very different world. And indeed it was different than what we're accustomed to these days, as though its time in history, absent the conveniences and 'real time' communication we associate with today, and its remote location, isolating it from the influences of the outside world, created an atmosphere of stubborn independence and selfreliance, and a uniqueness in the character of its citizens. It's a step back into history, both long ago and comparatively recent. For me, it was an extremely rewarding experience, more than justifying my time and effort to make the journey across the desert.
As always, we appreciate you tagging along for the adventure. We hope you enjoy the exploration into this fascinating site, far out in the California desert. Thanks for watching.
