Here's my suggestion based on what has worked for twenty years. The types of debt collection scams change but here is the solution. These scammers will threaten jail, garnishing without a judgment, etc.

Insist they mail you a letter explaining the debt.

Legitimate companies (even ones that routinely violate the law) will do this.

But the scammers won't they are terrified of sending fraudulent mail across state lines.

They will kick and scream but when they realize you won't pay them until you can get something in the mail (not email, not fax, not text but mail), then they will move on.

These scammers can't be sued as they are not real companies instead they get your info usually off the dark web so they have your contact info and social, etc. but they have no right to collect the debt.

If by chance they are legit, then you will have a fabulous lawsuit against them for violating the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act).
