Don’t damage your stuff! Good training requires good foundations.

Training the foundation of the task off of the ultimate object you’ll need will ensure that your final task looks the way you’d like, and reduces frustration for you and your dog. You can work out all the complicated stuff out on an object you don’t care about (like like a wooden dowel instead of your meds!) and also decrease the risk that your dog injures themselves or damages your medical equipment.

Proof and generalize the skill to multiple different objects, and by that time it will be nice and refined and ready to be out to use on your goal object. Happy training!
