Consistency: A Lesson from the Trail

CONSISTENCY is a principle that's made the biggest difference for me in my endurance and ultrarunning training and my life.

It means putting in the work, every day, no matter what. I think most of us are willing to do the work, but the challenge is doing the right work with consistency.

On the trail, I have a mantra – "Relentless Forward Progress."

It's easy to misconstrue. You might think this only applies starting up the next 2000' climb or coercing yourself  to the next aid station that's 12 miles way at 3:30am when it's 25 degree temperatures.

But Relentless Forward Progress is most important when it comes to the CONSISTENCY of effort of EVERY DAY.

It's about doing the work that needs to be done, before there's urgency, before the next action becomes critical.

At work, it might mean making that phone call you have to make, or jamming late at night to prep for the big meeting, or finally making that decision to let go of a team member that's just not working out.

In March, my running coach challenged all of his athletes to a 31Day Strength Challenge. In addition to putting in the miles every day, every week, he challenged us to do at least 20 minutes of strength training every day.

Working those extra workouts into the day was hard. It meant doing planks and wall sits in my office between calls.  It meant hitting the garage after coming home from a 20+ mile trail run and doing lunges, kettlebell swings and deadlifts. It required patience to learn new movements like Pistol Squats and Runner's Arabesque and falling on my ass.

Consistency is asking my wife and son for 30 minutes in the garage before dinner, knocking out pullups and Russian twists when I'm hungry and tired from a full day at work.

Consistency means getting up at 4am on a Saturday morning to get to the trail and logging every calorie that I eat.

Consistency means still to do strength training every day in April because now the habit is formed.

So what about your work, your business?

Consistency is logging your calls – doing your 20 outreaches every day.

Consistency is keeping your daily standups, team meetings and 11s on your calendar, even when they're not convenient. Consistency is doing quarterly performancereviews so that your team knows exactly where they're doing well, and how they can improve.

Consistency is investing the time in yourself every week to learn, to get better – joining that webinar or workshop you wanted to join, even if that means telling a prospect that Thursday afternoon is already booked for you. (Don't worry – you can have the meeting on Friday and it'll be fine with them...)

Consistency is cancelling the demo that inbound prospect requested because you know they don't match your ICP.

Consistency is sticking to your guns when it comes to charging for pilots, instead of acquiescing that one time just because it's Big Logo Company.

Consistency is avoiding the email vortex first thing in the morning so that you can focus on the most important matters of the day first.

Consistency is the foundation that gets you the growth you want in three or six or twelve months down the road It's the every day effort that builds and multiplies over time.
