Company Wants to Own Everything I Invent | QOTD

Question of the Day: I accepted a job as a customer service representative for an I.T. Company. This company put into my onboarding documents that I had to assign all rights and ownership of, not just what was created during my employment, but what I would create after I left the company. If I did not list what I already had invented under the exclusions and if my idea was not listed, then I would have to agree to transfer all rights or ownership to the company. My job doesn’t require me to invent anything. Why would they include all of this?

Your employer owns everything you create within the scope of your employment. It’s not uncommon for an employment agreement to require you to assign everything you create during your job or with company resources. Sometimes you have to declare what you’ve already created and outside projects. Be sure to ask questions if it seems like your employment agreement is overreaching or overly broad.

If legal questions were easy, we wouldn’t need lawyers.
