Chronic diarrhea is diarrhea occurring for greater than 24 weeks, and it is broadly categorized into secretory, osmotic, functional, inflammatory, and malabsorptive causes. Causes include medications, crohn’s disease and celiac disease among many others. Depending on the cause, we can see either watery diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea with or without food. In this lesson, we look at an approach to the cause of chronic diarrhea, including a variety of factors that can help determine the cause of chronic diarrhea.
