James “Jim” Crawford entered the Army in 1966 and upon completing flight school in 1967 was assigned fly Ch47 Chinooks in Southeast Asia. Arriving in Vietnam at the beginning of the Tet Offensive in 1968, Crawford joined the 213th Assault Support Helicopter Company, the “Black Cats of Phu Loi,” and logged over 2,000 hours of combat flight time before the end of his tour in February of 1970.
