In this video, I address a recurring question from viewers about why I don't advocate cutting out processed foods or promoting diets focused on fasting and whole foods. As a psychotherapist, not a nutritionist, my approach is rooted in changing our mindset before altering our behaviors, which is a critical shift needed for longterm change in handling binge eating.I discuss how mere behavior modification often leads people into a frustrating loop of attempting diet changes without success and subsequent selfblame. This insight was partly inspired by Dr. K from @healthygamergg Dr. K emphasizes that true change occurs internally first, affecting our decisions and actions subsequently. In this video, I share a clip from Dr. K that brilliantly captures this concept: real change comes from within and our actions follow that internal shift. This understanding is pivotal for anyone struggling with food chaos and binge eating, where recovery manifests through altered food behaviors as a result of changed mindsets.I introduce two essential components for mindset change: acquiring new information and challenging existing thoughts and patterns. For example, learning about the importance of eating regularly could help mitigate binge urges, representing a type of new information that can facilitate change. Dr. K explains that the process of change parallels learning, with brain circuits involved in change being identical to those used for learning, located in our hippocampus where longterm memory is stored.I also discuss three strategic pieces of advice to embed new learning effectively: avoid bingewatching content, which can overload working memory similar to how overeating can overwhelm digestion; practice patience, as impatience can lead to frustration and backsliding; and engage in reflection to internalize and personalize the information received, facilitating deeper understanding and application.I end the video by encouraging viewers to take action not by just consuming more content but by actively reflecting on what they've learned, likening it to learning a new language where consistent practice and recall are necessary for mastery. I suggest turning off YouTube after watching to really digest and reflect on the content, emphasizing that recovery and change are more about quality engagement with information than quantity. Thanks for watching, and I hope this discussion helps you rethink how you approach recovery from binge eating and behavioral change in general. I'll see you in the next video—but take some time to reflect first.
