Caruana’s cunning chess combination

ChessNetwork

Featured is the game between Fabiano Caruana and Ruslan Ponomariov from the 2014 Dortmund Sparkassen Tournament. The opening is a Petrov’s Defense, Nimzowitsch Attack with Caruana and Ponomariov both castling queenside. In the middlegame, Caruana’s f4 creates targetable isolated pawns in Ponomariov’s camp. In the endgame, Ponomariov’s principled looking b6 carries a weakness that Caruana quickly exploits. The final combination by Caruana was so aesthetic that Ponomariov was kind enough to let it play out straight to mate!
