Shophouses have existed in Singapore since the 19th century. Balestier is home to many of these twostorey dwellings that traditionally housed businesses on the ground floor and homes above.

One such 1920s unit in the neighbourhood has been transformed to the concept of coliving by local designers Scene Shang. It’s tastefully furnished and interiors inspired by Balestier’s rattanweaving industries. The shophouse today is a boutique home where different residents live communally — similar to how early immigrants to Singapore did so in the past.
