Breakthrough in research on apomixis, the holy grail of agriculture. Together with researchers from KeyGene, Japan and New Zealand, our researchers discovered a gene that will make it possible in the future to produce seeds from crops that are all genetically identical to the parent plant and that do not involve pollination. This phenomenon, called apomixis, enables plants with a desirable combination of traits to produce many seeds with the same desirable combination of genes as the parent plant. The discovery is expected to lead to major innovations in plant breeding over the coming years.
