Biking Pennsylvania: The Allegheny River Trail [Caution! Dark Scary Tunnels]

Follow
Adventures on ebikes

Spectacular scenery awaits on every mile of the Allegheny River Trail in Western Pennsylvania. About 45 minutes North of Pittsburgh this segment of the Allegheny River was designated a national wide and scenic river. There are two segments to the trail – the first is a 27.5 mile long asphalt segment; then after traveling the gap of 4.5 miles, the last 2.5 miles are more isolated. This trail is part of the 270 mile Erie to Pittsburgh trail that one day will link Presque Isle on Lake Erie with Pittsburgh, where it will join the Great Allegheny Passage.

On our trip we traveled through the 2,868 feet long Rockland Tunnel, and the 3,300 foot long Kennerdell Tunnel. Both of these tunnels have doglegs and are very dark – so make sure you have lights! This ride took place on June 9, 2022.
