Baxter: The Saddest Cat I’ve Ever Met

The Shabby Tabby Cat Cafe

Meet Baxter, my mystery foster who’s giving a new meaning to CATatonic. This senior boy was found outside walking in circles with a severely infected mouth, about a month ago. His remaining teeth were removed, infections were treated, bloodwork was good, mouth biopsy great. But something is very wrong.

The rescue he was with was at a bit of a loss and I decided to give it a whirl. I love seniors and I love challenges. I took him home this weekend and he literally paced the room he was in for hours and hours and hours (no exaggeration), won’t eat, won’t use the litter box, won’t show any emotion whatsoever. The vet believes he can see and I do too, to an extent, but not very well. At his appointment last night we decided on an appetite stimulant, ant anxiety meds, and to syringe feed him. We are leaning towards dementia vs brain tumor and it’s one of the more heartbreaking cats I have seen in 5 years. He has seemed to slow down on the pacing since starting the medications, and I’m really hoping his appetite perks up and the more love he gets, he snaps out of whatever is going on, but I’m just not sure.

This cat is at my house, away from scary dogs, and fresh cats, but in hopes that any of this looks or sounds familiar to you, I would love suggestions and thoughts. This poor poor guy.
