Basenji is a word that means something like "small wild animal from the bush" when translated into English. The Basenji is a member of the Pariah dog family, which includes primitive dogs that lived close to humans but were not fed or cared for. It demonstrates that these dogs are selfsufficient and independent.

The Basenji's history and origins:

The origins of the dog breed can be traced to Central Africa. The Basenji, commonly known as the African Bush Dog or Congo Dog, is one of the FCI's oldest recognized breeds. The breed, however, remains largely unknown. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of the dog breed, however it's thought to have originated in Egypt. Drawings of this breed of dog have also been discovered inside Egyptian pyramids. In 1870, British researchers in Central Africa discovered the Basenji for the first time. They have been bred as domestic dogs since 1930. Original Basenjis are still used by pygmies in the Central African jungle to help them drive animals into outstretched nets for capture.

The Basenji's appearance:

According to the F.C.I., males should stand around 43 cm tall, while females should be around 40 cm. The weight ranges from 10 to 12 kilograms. The Basenji lives for 12 to 15 years on average. Their coats are short, dense, fine, and lustrous, and the FCI has authorized the colors black and white, red, brown, white, tan white, solid black, tan, white with tan markings above the eyes, and tan, white with tan markings above the eyes. Basenjis are thin dogs but with a lot of muscle, and they are very athletic.

The Basenji's nature and personality:

The Basenjis are intelligent and selfreliant. Their distinctive bark is a hybrid of a yodel and howling that is reminiscent of wolf howling.
When the dogs are in their natural surroundings, they are very clean, almost like cats, and have no odor.
Basenjis are calm and balanced, yet they are also incredibly alert and move quickly when distracted.
Basenji training is difficult and should only be attempted by experienced dog handlers. Because they are stubborn, it is critical to establish clear standards, maintain consistency, and show them who is in authority. When it comes to strangers, they are rather reserved.

Basenji's Exercise and Grooming:

The dogs have a natural hunting instinct as well as a high demand for daily activity and challenges. Basenjis are tough, healthy dogs who are only impacted by genetic disorders such urinary tract infections or gastrointestinal difficulties on rare occasions. Brushing isn't necessary because basenjis lose almost no hair. Allergy sufferers will like the dog. In the winter, owners should keep in mind that Basenjis are quite sensitive to the cold and should wear an extra coat.
