MATE COMMUNICATE INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
When signing up the only hidden charge was the $300 hit for installing NBN in a new build. I've heard that Telstra salespeople offer to waive the charge if you sign up for a 24 month deal with them, but with Mates, as their package is month to month, refused to compromise. Furthermore, as NBN hadn't been used in our flat before, setup was a bit confusing as we didn't realise that there was a router inside our apartment already, but after a bit of googling you just plugged the RJ45 cable into the NBN router and connected it to your own router. If you're going with a BYOM solution, you'll of course need your own RJ45 connector.

Once it was up and running we've been hitting a solid down and upstream, which was GREAT coming from an ADSL background.

MATE COMMUNICATE AFTER 6 MONTHS
We've been using Mates for over 7 months now. Initially the service was superfast, but after the 4 month mark, things started to feel slower. I've done some further testing and it seems that when pinging servers in the UK during peak hours I now get around 5MB/s, and servers in America get me 30MB/s, but servers in Australia are still 90+MB/s, so it's not all bad. The issue could be that perhaps more units in my block might have also upgraded to NBN or they too do the nasty on you and degrade your service after 4 months. But either way, they're still charging me $99 per month while my service has degraded. It's disappointing, but on the positives we're on a month by month contract so switching will be easy. Hey, I might even try the whole ADSL route to see how it compares to NBN, so if anyone has any recommendations please let me know.
