Watch as historian and nature enthusiast Joe Thompson explores an underground passage made of stone at Donabate in Co. Dublin. When he made this video he was probably the first human to explore the inside of the tunnel in around a thousand years.
The tunnel is likely to be a type of medieval monument known to archaeologists as a souterrain (from French, meaning 'underground'). Souterrains were built in medieval times, roughly between the 8th and 12th centuries. Archaeologists believe they were built for the cold storage of food, particularly dairy produce, and they might also have served as hideaways from the Viking raids that became prevalent from the 9th century.
Joe was happy to share this exciting video with Mythical Ireland. He climbed down into the structure and in so doing he became the first human probably in centuries to explore its underground passages.
