Alonzo Mourning is a retired American professional basketball player who has been serving as the vice president of player programs and development for the Miami Heat since June 2009. Known by the nickname "Zo," Mourning spent the majority of his 15year career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Heat. Playing primarily as a center, Mourning showcased his defensive prowess, earning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award twice and securing spots on the NBA AllDefensive Team twice. After a successful college basketball career at Georgetown University, Mourning overcame health challenges, including a kidney transplant, to make a remarkable comeback. He notably won the NBA championship with the Heat in 2006. Throughout his career, Mourning also played for the Charlotte Hornets and New Jersey Nets. In recognition of his contributions, Mourning had his number retired by the Miami Heat on March 30, 2009, becoming the first player from the franchise to receive this honor. He has been honored with inductions into various halls of fame, including the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August 2014, and the FIBA Hall of Fame in August 2019.
