Why has the Humane Society of New York, a large and wealthy animal shelter in Manhattan, been warehousing animals for the past three years instead of sending them home? Here's what we know. The Executive Director, Sandra DeFeo, believes that the animals are "home" at the shelter and that their cages are "apartments." That twisted perspective mattered less before 2020 because DeFeo had an Adoption Director who did the work, a board president who was present 4 days/week and a building that was open to adopters.
