Frozen AC Unit

It will happen to a lot of people...The air conditioner stops blowing cold and then it stops blowing at all. It is possible that the HVAC system has a freon leak and the unit freezes and air cannot pass through the coil.

What happens is that over time, acid and moisture within the system attacks the metal and finally pin hole leaks penetrate. The refrigerant escapes and before you know it there is a block of ice on the unit.

It is recommended you turn off the air conditioning and call your local air conditioning system. You can melt the ice by turning the thermostat on to fan so the warm air in the room will melt the ice.

Before you call an HVAC contractor, make sure your filter is clean. Poor airflow will ice up your air conditioning system. If you have a bad blower motor, that may cause icing as well.

Open up the evaporator compartment and perform a leak detection on the coil. There are a couple ways of doing this and I prefer an electronic leak detection. Once the leak is confirmed, you will need to replace that part.
