Investigators can only study a radar recording of the plane’s flight path. It paints a baffling picture. Almost from takeoff, Flight 409 follows an unusual and erratic path. Investigators conclude the plane was dangerously out of control.

From Season 12 Episode 11 "Heading To Disaster": There’s a thunderstorm raging off the coast of Lebanon as Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409 takes off from Beirut Airport. Tower controllers instruct the crew to turn on to a new heading to avoid the storm. But as the bank the plane, a series of alarms sound in the cockpit and moments later, Flight 409 spirals into the Mediterranean Sea, killing all 90 people on board.

Witnesses, including air traffic controllers, reported seeing an explosion at the time of the crash and sabotage seems like a real possibility. Lebanon’s Civil Aviation Authority immediately launches an investigation but the wreckage sunk to the bottom of the ocean. If investigators are ever going to discover what happened, they will first need to locate the plane.
