People sometimes call Gran Canaria the miniature continent because of its varied nature and amazing natural diversity. In this video I'm going to explore both the flora and fauna, and the geology of Gran Canaria.

This journey will take me from the city of Las Palmas in the north, to the biggest botanical garden in Spain where you can see some of the variety of plants that can be found on Gran Canaria as well as in all of Macronesia.

I also discuss the volcanic activity that created the island itself, as well as enormous craters like the famous Caldera de Bandama, and the highest point of Gran Canaria Pico de las Nieves. This is also a perfect spot to discuss the rainfall of the island...or the lack there of...and the constant wind rushing across the island from the Azores to the Equator.

But there's more. I also talk about canyons at the Barranco de las Vacas, and about endemic species while visiting the Cocodrilo Park. And of course, I have to visit the famous sand dunes of Maspalomas too. And finally, I talk about the great forests of Gran Canaria that used to fill the island. And how they were ruined by the sugar industry. A reforestation project is in the works, but it's slow going to get back to its former glory...
