Dr. Stanley Coren has researched that dog barking has different meanings depending on pitch, duration, and frequency. Let's check out 5 types of dog barking and what they mean.

1. Constant Barking

You might have heard your dog keep barking. He may bark 24 times with pauses in between. It is to call the pack. If he keeps barking like this, he may say ‘come here and check this out’.

2. A Highpitched Barking

Your dog may bark 12 times with a highpitch tone in case he may get excited at the doorbell and realize that you’re home. Especially, when he had been alone for so long and finally met a family member, he could bark with a highpitch tone and start to whine. It may indicate “Where were you?” or “ I missed you”.

3. A Lowpitched Barking

Lowpitched barks may indicate “I’m in trouble, come here”. For example, he may have a hard time getting his toy, trying to wake you up, getting his food or so.

4. Playful Barking

When your dog gets excited, he may make a playful, stutter bark with a play bow gesture. If he gets more excited, he may bark 12 times in a highpitched tone. He may huff. It may mean he insists on playing. Then, play with him if possible.

5. Howling

If your dog howls like a wolf, he may wanna call the pack somewhere to let them know where he is. Other than that, howling can be a sign of anxiety or stress. So, check under what circumstances he howls. If he seems stressed out, take him out for a walk or give him a nosewalking toy for stress release.
