The college was founded in 1893 as the Woman's College of Frederick by the Potomac Synod of the Reformed Church of the United States.
For more than 125 years, Hood College has prepared students for successful careers and the responsibilities of citizenship.
In 1893, the College was officially chartered with the purpose of creating a college for the promotion and advancement of women and the cultivation and diffusion of literature, science and art.
In 1897, the College acquired a 28acre tract of farm land on the northwestern edge of the city, made possible by a gift from Margaret Scholl Hood.
In recognition of Mrs. Hood's generosity, the college has been called Hood College since 1912.
Today more than 30 academic, residential and administrative buildings are quartered on Hood’s 50acre campus.
Since the fall of 2003, Hood College has become fully coeducational for both women and men.

Hood College has a long history of caring for one of the most diverse collections of trees in the City of Frederick.
Selecting and planting trees on the campus is a tradition that dates back to the earliest years of the Hood College.
A Hood Campus Tree Walk has been developed to help treelovers of all ages locate and learn about unique trees around the campus, including those on the Big Tree List.
A printable map and an interactive site is available online to follow the campus walk and learn about each tree.
