Nature Live Camera

Have a look inside the nest of a Tawny Owl.
UPDATE: The female owl Frida has laid her first egg on March 16. She leaves the nest every evening to go hunting and returns in the early morning. Read more about this project in this description...

This nest is located near my small farm in the northern part of Denmark.
I actually sat it up for squirrels but nature never stop surprising.
Only a day after I placed the nest box, the female owl visited it for the first time.

Observations so far:

March 6 a tawny owl looks into the nest for the first time and on March 7, a female tawny owl enters the nest I have named this female tawny owl Frida.
Near the nest we can hear the male responding to her calls but we still have not seen him.
On March 11 the male reveals himself for the fist time on camera as he brings Frida a mouse. I have named the male tawny owl Theodor.
Here is a short video where you can see Theodor bringing Frida a mouse:    • Male Tawny Owl brings a mouse to the ...

Eggs:
On March 16 Frida lays her first egg and she now stays in the nest all day from early morning to late afternoon. Every evening she still leaves the nest to go hunting and leaves the egg unguarded in the nest. Apparently this is normal behaviour.

On March 19 Frida lays her second egg. The next day Theodor checked in on the eggs, while Frida was out.

On March 21 Frida lays her third egg. After this Theodor starts to come more often with mice for Frida. She stays most of the time in the nest now.

On March 24 Frida lays her fourth egg. She hardly ever leave the nest now. Theodor is busy on his hunt for mice. He's often successfull in the hunting. They seem to chat more and in various ways only they understand.

The first egg hatched on April 18th 2024.
The second egg hatched on April 19th 2024.
The third egg hatched on April 19th 2024.

Theodor is now very busy providing mice for Frida, so she can feed the owlets.

In Denmark tawny owls usually lay between 24 eggs with approximately 2 days between each egg. Once all the eggs are laid she will most likely stay in the nest, and the male will bring her food.

I will keep this description updated as things progress.

Enjoy watching and please report sightings in the chat.

All the best
Morten
