What is a grease trap?

A grease trap is a plumbing device designed to prevent fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from entering the wastewater system. It is commonly used in commercial kitchens, restaurants, and food processing facilities where large amounts of FOG are generated during cooking and food preparation.

The grease trap works by intercepting the wastewater flow and allowing it to cool, which causes the FOG to separate and rise to the top of the trap. The cooled wastewater, with less FOG, then exits the trap and continues to the sewer or septic system. The FOG that has risen to the top of the trap is contained and can be removed periodically by a licensed professional to prevent blockages and buildup in the wastewater system.

Grease traps come in different sizes and types, depending on the volume of wastewater generated and the specific requirements of the facility. It is important to maintain and clean the grease trap regularly to ensure it operates effectively and efficiently.

How to clean and maintain a grease trap?

Cleaning and maintaining a grease trap is essential to ensure its effectiveness and prevent blockages and buildup in the wastewater system. Here are some steps to clean and maintain a grease trap:

Schedule regular cleaning: Grease traps should be cleaned regularly, depending on the volume of wastewater generated and the type of grease trap. A licensed professional should clean and inspect the grease trap regularly to ensure it operates efficiently.

Remove the lid and inspect the trap: The lid of the grease trap should be removed, and the interior of the trap should be inspected for any buildup or blockages. If there is any buildup, it should be removed using a scraper or a ladle.

Pump out the grease: Once the buildup is removed, the grease trap should be pumped out using a vacuum truck or other specialized equipment. The grease should be disposed of according to local regulations.

Clean the trap: The interior of the grease trap should be cleaned using hot water and a highpressure hose to remove any remaining grease and debris.

Replace the lid and restart the system: Once the cleaning is complete, the lid should be replaced, and the system should be restarted.

In addition to regular cleaning, here are some tips for maintaining a grease trap:

Do not pour grease down the drain: It is important to properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease by collecting them in a separate container and disposing of them according to local regulations.

Use enzymebased cleaners: Enzymebased cleaners can help break down the grease and prevent buildup in the grease trap.

Inspect and repair the system: Regular inspections can help identify any issues or damage to the grease trap. Any repairs or replacements should be made promptly to ensure the system operates effectively.
