The Honda CRV is the automotive world’s peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s incredibly familiar, nearly universally wellliked, and a more satisfying than you remember. It’s not the most exciting car on the road, but if you’re looking for something safe, affordable, and attractive, the Honda CRV is a good choice.

The CR’V’s base LX trim arrives fitted with a 2.4liter 4cylinder engine, but the EX, EXL, and Touring trims all receive Honda’s 1.5liter 4cylinder. Good for 190 horsepower and 179 poundfeet of torque, the smaller 4pot is more satisfying and responsive, and it gets better fuel economy, too. Chris managed 27.7 miles per gallon on his test loop (without using the CRV’s Economy mode), while the EPA expects 29 mpg combined.

Allwheel drive is optional, and it works in a way designed to help with slippery road conditions, rather than being an offroad setup. Honda also packs Honda Sensing—it’s suite of advanced safety features—into every trim, save the LX. Adaptive cruise control, forwardcollision warning, lanedeparture warning, lanekeeping assist, and automatic emergency braking are all included in Honda Sensing.

Inside, CRV owners will enjoy 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and nearly 76 cubes with the rear seat folded. A 7inch touchscreen comes standard on the LX and above, and it runs both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Chris didn’t love the CRV’s voicecommand system, but he did acknowledge that this version of the car’s infotainment setup was an improvement over the 2018 model.
