In the spring of 1940, at the start of the Second World War, France suffered the biggest military defeat in its history. On the brink of the abyss, the Republic, taking refuge in Bordeaux, threw itself into the arms of Pétain. The marshal urgently requests an armistice from Germany.
This is precisely what Hitler wanted. Pétain's government wants neither a continuation of the fight nor a military capitulation that is too dishonorable. Furthermore, the English have their backs to the wall. Hitler's trap closes on France. The country will be wiped out or tamed. The revenge of 1918 is within cannon range.
