The Orwell Foundation exists to perpetuate the achievements of the British writer George Orwell (19031950). In a relatively brief career, cut short by illness, Orwell wrote six novels, two of which, Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen EightyFour (1949), have had a profound influence on the postwar world. As well as believing in the moral power of language, Orwell understood the dangers that accompany its corruption. His work transcends the circumstances in which it was conceived and is uniquely relevant to the social, political and economic landscapes of the twentyfirst century. Whether through the prestigious Orwell Prizes for political writing or our growing programme of events, lectures and publications, our aim is to connect with the different constituencies to whom Orwell and his writings are a source of inspiration, from policymakers and politicians to students and schoolchildren, and to offer a platform for debate and discussion for widest possible public audience.
