祇園お化けは、京都の花街で節分の夜に行われていた厄除け行事です。仲良しの若い芸妓や舞妓さんがグループで仮装して、お座敷を回ります。
「節分お化け」は、京都を中心として江戸時代末期から盛んに行われていたとされています。旧暦で大晦日にあたる節分の日には邪気が生じると考えられ、節分の夜に、いつもとは違う格好に扮装し、その姿のままで寺社へお参りにいったということです

Gion Obake is an event held on the night of Setsubun in Kyoto's redlight district to ward off evil spirits. A group of young geisha and maiko friends dress up in costumes and go around the tatami mats.
``Setsubun Ghost'' is said to have been popular since the end of the Edo period, mainly in Kyoto. It is believed that evil spirits arise on Setsubun, which corresponds to New Year's Eve in the lunar calendar, so on Setsubun night, people dressed up in different outfits than usual and went to visit temples and shrines in that outfit.
