അപൂര്‍വരോഗം ബാധിച്ച മക്കള്‍ക്കൊപ്പം ജീവിതത്തോട് പൊരുതുന്ന വീട്ടമ്മയാണ് കോട്ടയം കൊഴുവനാല്‍ സ്വദേശിയായ സ്മിത ആന്റണി. മനുസ്മിത ദമ്പതികളുടെ ഇളയ രണ്ടു കുട്ടികളാണ് ഓട്ടിസം അടക്കമുള്ള രോഗത്താല്‍ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുന്നത്. ഈ മക്കളുടെ ചികിത്സയ്ക്കും ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതത്തിന് വലയൊരു തുക ആവശ്യമാണ്. രണ്ട് മക്കളിലും രോഗം കണ്ടെത്തിയതോടെ ജോലി ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് നാട്ടിലെത്തിയ ദമ്പതികള്‍ക്ക് താങ്ങാവുന്നതിലും അപ്പുറമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഇതോടെ സഹായത്തിനായി സര്‍ക്കാരിനെ സമീപിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പിന്നാലെ 2022ല്‍ സ്മിതയ്ക്ക് ജോലി നല്‍കാന്‍ കൊഴുവനാല്‍ പഞ്ചായത്ത് തീരുമാനിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും അത് എങ്ങുമെത്തിയില്ല. സഹായ ഹസ്തവുമായി കൂടെ നില്‍ക്കേണ്ട നാട്ടുകാര്‍ അടക്കമുള്ളവര്‍ കയ്യൊഴിഞ്ഞതോടെയാണ് സ്മിതയും കുടുംബവും ദയാവധത്തിന് അനുമതി തേടി ഹൈക്കോടതിയെയും സുപ്രീം കോടതിയെയും സമീപിച്ചത്.

Smita Antony, a native of Kottayam Kozhuvanal, is a mother who is fighting all the odds for her children who are suffering from a rare disease. Manu and Smita's youngest children are suffering from diseases including autism. A huge sum of money is required for the children's treatment. It was too much for the couple to handle who left their jobs after their two children were diagnosed with the disease. They later approached the government for help. Later, Kozhuvanal panchayat decided to give Smitha a job in 2022, but it did not get anywhere. Smitha and her family approached the High Court and the Supreme Court seeking permission for euthanasia when many who promised to help them eventually gave up.
