Gac is a type of perennial melon grown throughout southeast Asian countries and Northeastern Australia. This orangereddish fruit is scientifically known as Momordica cochin Chinensis. It has rich content of betacarotene and lycopene. It grows as dioecious vines. Its vines extend to 20 meters long, and the flowers bloom once a year, around 23 months after planting. In one season, a plant can produce 3060 fruits. Gac has been commonly used in Vietnam, China, and Thailand as food and traditional medicine. The aril surrounding gac seeds is cooked with sticky rice and served at weddings in Vietnam. Due to the high contents of betacarotene and lycopene, extracts from the fruit's aril is used to manufacture dietary supplements. Jojo punnakkal of Amalapuram Ayyampuzha introduced this vine for the first time in Kerala and promotes it to other farmers. He aims to establish a firm to make valueadded products from the fruit and its seed.
