Years ago now (2015), I worked at the PawNosh booth at Super Zoo a huge pet trade show in Las Vegas.  As I was getting ready to leave the show and head to the airport, I walked the floor one more time and happened upon a booth that featured the Zen Clipper.

I was so impressed with the design, I asked for a demo (it was cool, they had toothpicks to show how the clippers would cut through a nail).  I then asked if I could review their product.  They gave me one to bring home, so I could do a review on it.

I loved it, and still love it.

The Zen Clipper Cat Nail Clippers are designed to be a pet (and owner) friendly way of trimming your cat’s nails. If you’re concerned about hurting your cat by trimming claws too far, then the Zen Clippers are a tool that should give you confidence, as they are made to make the whole process a lot simpler.

Rather than a traditional flat or crescent clipping blade, these clippers have a conical blade. The way it works is that you insert the tip of the nail into the hole. You only need to place the tip in, and then close the handles together as you would with any scissors. Because only the tip goes into the hole, you avoid hitting the quick at all.

The reason this works so well is that the Zen Clippers come in different sizes, so you can find the one that best fits your cat. This means that you won’t be able to accidentally push too much of the claw through – only the tip will fit if you get the right size. And even if you don’t, it’s a comfortable tool that won’t cause distress, so you can easily check that you’re only cutting the clear claw and not the pink quick inside.

The clipping action on some clippers can distress your cat further, because the blades don’t actually cut but instead crush and sever the nail. Not so with the Zen Clippers – the blade is sharp and it gives a clean cut. This makes it faster, and it stops the Clippers from pulling on your cat’s paw.

The other benefit is that it means no clipping noise – the springloaded handle closes and opens without a sound, and the blade is silent. If your cat is spooked by the sound of clippers then these should be perfect.

It’s important that any pet nail clippers are comfortable not just for the cat but also for the owner. If they’re not easy to use then you’re more likely to fumble, which could lead to the blade shifting and cutting the quick, hurting your kitty.

So the Zen Clippers are instead designed with a cushioned grip that should comfortably fit most hands. The spring is simple to use – it isn’t super tense – so cutting your cat’s claws back should be a painless job for everyone.

Finding the right size is important. Zen Clippers come in a range of sizes to suit different animals, and if you buy a set that’s too small then the tip of the nail won’t fit into the hole. Zen themselves recommend Small for cats, but you may prefer a Medium or a Large depending on your kitty.
