The breed was originally called little terriers in Scotland, where they were bred to hunt vermin and rats. But things really changed for the Yorkshire terriers in 1886, when the breed was granted recognition by the Kennel Club of England. After that, they gained tremendous popularity and became a fashion statement and companion dog for English ladies.
