Xiangyang (襄阳), located in northwestern Hubei province, China, is the secondlargest prefecturelevel city by population in the region. Historically known as Xiangfan (襄樊) until 2010, it is a city rich in history and culture, with the Han River (汉江) running through its center, dividing it into two distinct areas: Fancheng (樊城) to the north and Xiangcheng District (襄城区) to the south. Xiangyang is notable for its wellpreserved ancient city walls, which are among the oldest in China.

The city has played a significant role in Chinese history, serving as a strategic location on the middle reaches of the Han River. It was the capital of Jing Province (荆州) during the Eastern Han dynasty, under the governance of the warlord Liu Biao (刘表). Xiangyang has witnessed several key battles, including the Battle of Xiangyang and the Battle of Fancheng during the late HanThree Kingdoms period, which were pivotal in the historical narrative of that era.

In more recent history, Xiangyang was a center of the White Lotus Rebellion against the Qing dynasty in 1796. The city underwent significant development in the 20th century, merging with Fancheng to form Xiangfan City in 1950, before being renamed back to Xiangyang in 2010. Today, it is a hub for transportation, industry, and agriculture, with a strong emphasis on textile production, machinery manufacture, chemical processing, and electronics. Xiangyang is also home to Dongfeng Motors, making it an important city in China's automobile industry.

The city's strategic importance has been recognized throughout history, from serving as a major defensive barrier against the Mongol conquest during the Song dynasty to its role in modern economic development with the establishment of the Hubei Free Trade Zone. Xiangyang's rich history, combined with its modern achievements, makes it a unique and fascinating city that bridges China's past with its future.
