RALEIGH, NC WRAL’s award winning documentary unit is checking in with the people and stories at the heart of our most impactful documentaries.
A new 30minute show, WRAL Docs 2023: Where Are They Now?, premieres December 25, 2023, and features new interviews with some of the most memorable people in our films.

Several of the hurricane victims in our documentary, Aftermath: North Carolina Hurricane Victims Left Behind, are finally back home after waiting years for help and answers from a state program.

“These are the moments and stories that never leave you,” said WRAL Investigative Documentary Reporter Cristin Severance who leads the WRAL Doc unit. “We were there when Franklin Jones, a Hurricane Matthew and Florence survivor, was at his lowest point. He tearfully told us he could not take living in a hotel any longer. A year later, Jones and his wife are finally back home, and their new house is beautiful. It’s an honor to share these hopeful moments with our viewers.”

Severance and WRAL Documentary Photojournalist Dwayne Myers check in with the mother in our Critical Term: Why are Black mothers and babies dying? documentary who delivered a baby boy, Denver, on camera at UNC Women’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Our Crisis Next Door documentary investigated the fentanyl epidemic in North Carolina and featured mom Christie Barker Cummings. Christie lost her 18yearold son Kevin to a fentanyl overdose and forgave the man who sold Kevin the drugs that killed him. Her story of forgiveness and her mission to educate others continues to inspire others.
"The work that the WRAL doc team has done this year is impactful and important," Ashley Talley, WRAL's Enterprise Executive Producer said. "From exposing a broken system that wasn't serving hurricane victims well, to examining the longstanding misconceptions that endanger the lives of Black women and babies, the change Cristin and Dwayne have helped bring about is evident in this latest work."
