Lots of chugging noise and huffin’ ‘n chuffin’ and hissing and steam whistles with this one! I was spending a few days in Cumberland, MD and caught the world’s largest operating compoundmallet steam locomotive in action. It was ready to depart for Frostburg, MD along the @westernmarylandscenicrailr1683.
This engine is now the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s #1309. Previously, it was a C&O Railroad steam engine and was hangin’ out in Baltimore awaiting a restoration. It was built in 1949, kinda late for a steam engine, and was used to pull heavy coal loads.
