Working together for food system transformation – Kenya’s agroecological living landscapes (short)

The CGIAR Initiative on Transformational Agroecology Across Food, Land and Water Systems (‘Agroecology Initiative’) engages with food system actors in eight countries (Burkina Faso, India, Kenya, Lao PDR, Peru, Senegal, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe) to find contextspecific ways of putting into practice the 13 HLPE agroecological principles.

In territories referred to as “Agroecological Living Landscapes” (ALLs), international research teams from multiple CGIAR and partnering entities and disciplines are working with partners, including farmer associations or communities, private companies, international and national nongovernmental organizations as well as local, regional, and national policymakers to identify the most viable agroecological transition pathways.

In Kenya, the Agroecology Initiative’s interaction and engagement with the ALLs are organized via the host centers Community Sustainable Agriculture and Healthy Environment Program (CSHEP) and Drylands Natural Resources Centre (DNRC) that provide a physical space where food system actors can meet, interact, and cocreate knowledge. CSHEP is situated in Ndeiya, Kiambu County, and focuses on organic agriculture, while DNRC in Mbumbuni, Makueni County, focuses on permaculture.

This video documents selected activities that the Agroecology Initiative team has implemented jointly with partners since its inception in mid 2022. It focuses specifically on progress in the Kiambu ALL, and at national level, across three entry points: (1) Codesigning agroecological onfarm practices, (2) Fostering agroecological business models, (3) Creating an enabling environment for fair food systems.

The implementation of the Agroecology Initiative in Kenya is led by CIFORICRAF in collaboration with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and WorldFish. The Agroecology Initiative partners with Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM Kenya), InterSectoral Forum on Agrobiodiversity and Agroecology (ISFAA) at national level, as well as with the Community Sustainable Agriculture and Healthy Environment Program (CSHEP), and the Drylands Natural Resources Centre (DNRC) in the Agroecological Living Landscapes (ALLs) in Kiambu and Makueni Counties, respectively.
