Work Experience is NOT Most Important When Hiring

Many hiring managers and business owners might be surprised to hear me say this, but I'm sticking with my opinion here an employee's attitude is a more relevant indicator of their performance and retention than their experience in the field.

Don't just take my word for it. Look at the culture and hiring philosophies of some of the most successful companies Southwest Airlines, Ritz Carlton, Google, Apple, Goldman Sachs. Across multiple industries and in highly specialized fields you'll find examples of organizations that base their hiring decisions on the general attitude of the candidate in front of them over their relevant experience or even education.

In Mark Murphy's examination of about 20,000 new hires, he found that nearly half of them were no longer with their company after a year and a half due to their attitude not due to incompetence or lack of experience.

Consider that, even in highly technical or specialized fields, there's a certain level of competency that candidates require and most will meet, but that beyond such a baseline many will learn on the job if they have the right attitude towards their work. And, that's something that you can't determine based on where they went to school or their most recent position.

Also, many hard skills are being commoditized and today's pace of change is more rapid than ever. In such a world, a highly flexible, adaptable and enthusiastic team is much more valuable than one that is extremely informed in their field yet very rigid. The former team will outcompete the latter every time.

So, that's my take this week. Watch the video for more detail, and leave a comment or reach out with any questions!
