This project shouldn't be taken too seriously, it was more a case of satisfying my curiosity. However, I wouldn't regard it as a failure as they do actually work although not as well as the steel holdfasts. I think most of the time I'll be using a holdfast will be for carving or other chisel work where this would definitely hold the workpiece adequately. If the workpiece needed to be held super firmly then the steel holdfast would be the only way to go.

I really couldn't say how long they will last as there is a fair amount of flex on the dowel but using an Oak dowel and orientating the grain for maximum strength it may last a while. They take no time to make so if they do last a while then it could be worth making a couple. Every time I've walked past my workbench this past week I've given them a try just to put them through their paces and they are still going fine, no cracks or splits.

They work a little differently to the steel holdfasts as they don't wedge the same in the dog hole. They aren't as loose as the steel holdfasts but they flex a fair amount above the workbench top and push into the top of the dog hole there wouldn't be much force pushing into the bottom of the dog hole as the steel ones do. The dowel I bought was supposed to be 19mm but it was closer to 18mm and my dog holes are 19mm.

After making the first one and tinkering with it to get it to work I thought I could improve on the aesthetics when making the next ones but I made it look worse. I mention a few times in the video how ugly it is I didn't think it through too much but I'm sure a better looking wooden holdfast could be achieved. It reminds me of a Dodo ;)
