A popular spectacle at Air shows is watching a modified British Hawker Sea Fury with smoke generators installed under its wingtips, which inject smoke into the wingtip vortices while performing.

Wingtip vortices are circular patterns of rotating air left behind a wing as it generates lift. One wingtip vortex trails from the tip of each wing.

Those wingtip vortices persist for many seconds after the plane has passed, spinning and twisting in the breeze, like white ribbons floating in the air.

Wingtip vortices should not be mistaken for engine contrails, which are lineshaped clouds produced by aircraft engine exhaust, typically at aircraft cruise altitudes several miles above the Earth's surface.
