The Elgin Marbles "belong here in the UK" and should not be given back to Greece, the UK’s culture secretary has said.

Michelle Donalan said the removal of the artworks otherwise known as the Parthenon Sculptures or Parthenon Marbles would “open the gateway to the question of the entire contents of our museums".

Her comments follow reports the British Museum, where the marbles are currently displayed, is close to a deal to return the ancient artworks to Greece.
