After spotting a fox crossing the road, I decided to find out whether I could get close enough to take a picture of it. When I walked up to it, I suddenly remembered that I am a motherfing Disney princess.

At the date of recording, we ended up staying the night near their territory and got to hang out with them some more.
We left some food out for them and gave them water to drink. (This was during a summer drought when fresh water was in short supply; in most other situations it is best to avoid feeding wild animals.)
There was little to no risk of rabies. (Look up: Rabies Epidemiology in Portugal)
