Etty Bay is located on Far North Queensland's Cassowary Coast and is one of the few places where visitors can be fortunate enough to see wild Southern Cassowaries. This video contains the documentation of our encounter with two Southern Cassowaries engaged in a courtship display.

Travelling to Etty Bay in August 2021 we had spent two long days looking to film the Southern Cassowary with no luck. The local's had informed us that the Cassowaries had not been seen since recent rains, as they tend to harbour in the rainforest. On our third and final morning we awoke early to capture some footage of the beautiful sunrise. Having all but given up on sighting a Cassowary we decided to head back to our accommodation and pack up. As we turned to leave we couldn't believe our eyes when a large female Cassowary appeared before us. As she fed on the edge of the beach suddenly we heard a call from behind us. A second (male) Cassowary had now arrived and was clearly interested in the female. Once he approached her he began to shadow her closely and perform a courtship display which included very deep calls as he followed her every move. A few moments later, as quickly as they had arrived, they disappeared into the rainforest and were not seen again. Normally solitary creatures it is unusual to see pairs of Cassowaries in the wild.
