Why You Should Play Masks

Masks: A New Generation is a roleplaying game about teenage superheroes struggling to establish their identities, deal with social pressures, and maybe stop the world from getting blown up by supervillains. And as of posting this, it's my favorite RPG system in the world. I still love Monster of the Week (which I've previously stated to be my favorite), but I feel like Masks captures the philosophy and fast pace of the Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) engine just as well, while also going the extra mile in terms of encouraging players to take their characters' emotional arcs seriously. It steers campaigns in the direction of genuine characterdriven storytelling, a radical departure from the standard D&Dtype structure of the GM presenting a problem and the players using their characters' resources to solve it. I recommend it to anyone looking to run a superhero game, or for anyone who wants to run a game where the "roleplaying" part of "roleplaying game" should be taken seriously (even, no, especially, if they think their players might not be able to handle it).
