After a review several months ago of this Milwaukee M12 FUEL Right Angle Die Grinder model 2485, we wanted to take a moment to clear the air and explain some things. It's pretty typical that the Milwaukee M12 2485 die grinder gets used on a daily basis in our shop. After posting a quick social media video on doing some body repair, we noticed a common theme in some comments. People were complaining that they couldn't remove the bits from the collet.
They use a selfrelease collet on the Milwaukee 2485 M12 die grinder, and it does work a little differently. If you're used to typical collets on pneumatic die grinders, this can cause a little frustration. Take a deep breath and learn from our mistakes. We too had a rough time when we first received the 2485 Milwaukee.
Using a wrench, you break the colletnut loose, like any typical collet, and the nut frees up...you can easily turn it with your fingers. However, the bit / shaft is still fastened tightly in the tool and collet. Don't hit it with a hammer or put it in the vice. Just continue loosening the nut, with your fingers, until it hits a tough spot again (probably 3 or 4 turns). Now, use the same wrench to loosen the nut again, the second time will completely freeup the bit from the collet. These selfrelease collets have been used for a few years in routers but we're just seeing it in our metalworking and automotive worlds.
